CHAPTER TWELVE

Rose was ushered into a room in the wing of the palace that housed the offices. She could hear Rashid’s raised voice in the next room. He was not happy with someone, that was for sure. She only hoped he didn’t take that tone with her. She couldn’t understand what he was saying, but he was definitely not pleased.

His tirade stopped and the next thing Rose heard was the door opening and slamming back against the wall. She jumped and watched as Rashid marched into the room and grabbed her by the shoulders, rage evident on his face. She was not afraid. He held her by the shoulders but not harshly. There was no anger only concern, in his eyes. Was there a possibility that he cared for her? Her heart raced at the thought.

She reached up and held his cheek in the palm of her hand. The embers in his eyes slowly faded, replaced by an emotion that Rose could not quite read. “I’m sorry, I worried you Rashid.”

He crushed her in his arms, “I could not find you Rose. I didn’t know if you had left or if you had been…taken.” He said trying to mask the emotion in his voice.

She rested her head on his chest and listened to his heartbeat as it raced. “Your parents were taken, weren’t they?” Rose remembered reading that in the research she had done before traveling to Altraan to meet with him.

“Yes, when I was thirteen.”

“Rashid, we need to talk,” she tilted her head and looked him in the eye. What she had to tell him would not be easy.

“Then talk, Rose.”

She looked at the button on his shirt as she announced, “I’m pregnant with your child.”

“This I know.”

Her head shot up and met his eyes, “You knew? When…how…?”

“I had the matter investigated about the messages you left for me. Once I located them, I read them.” He paused, “I am sorry you could not reach me.”

“So this whole time you have known about the baby. Your proposal was because of the baby.”

“My child must have no doubts of its legitimacy as the future leader of my people. You spoke with such passion about my country’s shortcomings that I saw a way to give my child the name it needs along with moving my country forward.” He would not admit that keeping her near him had anything to do with his decision. That would only show weakness.

She was disappointed that there had been no other reason for his proposal. He had no personal feelings for her. She must have imagined the entire thing. She pushed away from his arms and walked to gaze out the window with a heavy heart. “Rashid, before I give you my answer, we need to come to an understanding about a few things.”

“Yes, of course, Rose.”

Rose turned to face him. “If you wish for me to help you with the women’s issues I need to know that I have your support to do so.”

“You would have my support.
